Rear View Mirror (Auto-Dim / Display Mirror) – Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Rear View Mirror and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the mirror—check vehicle power, grounds, and related wiring first.

  • Step 1: Confirm installation
    • Verify the mirror connector is fully seated and locked
    • Inspect for bent/pushed pins, loose terminals, or corrosion at the mirror connector
    • Confirm the harness isn’t pinched by the headliner/trim and isn’t pulling on the connector
  • Step 2: Verify power and ground at the mirror
    • Check the related fuse(s) for the mirror / overhead console / interior accessories
    • Confirm the mirror has a solid ground (poor ground can cause flicker, resets, or no power)
    • If the mirror cuts out when other accessories are used, suspect low voltage or a shared ground issue
  • Step 3: Check the mirror’s basic functions
    • If the mirror is completely dead: focus on fuse/power/ground first
    • If the mirror dims incorrectly: check for obstruction/contamination on the light sensors and verify nothing is blocking them
    • If the mirror is intermittent: gently wiggle-test the connector/harness while watching for power loss
  • Step 4: If equipped with reverse-camera / display features
    • Confirm the camera and camera power are working (a dead camera feed can look like a bad mirror)
    • Check for a reverse signal/input (if the mirror only acts up in reverse-related modes)
    • Inspect rear harness routing (camera wiring at liftgate/tailgate is a common failure point)
  • Step 5: Check for common vehicle-side causes
    • Water intrusion at the windshield/roof area causing connector corrosion
    • Aftermarket accessories tied into mirror power (dash cam, radar detector hardwire) causing voltage drops or noise
    • Loose A-pillar/roof harness connectors after windshield replacement
  • Step 6: If the issue started after recent work
    • Re-check anything recently touched (windshield replacement, headliner work, dash cam wiring, battery work)
    • Confirm no wires were pinched under trim and no connectors were left partially latched
  • Course of action
    • If the issue persists, contact UpFix with your VIN, exact symptoms (dead/flicker/dimming/display issue), and any related codes so we can help narrow it down. Call or email for assistance.
