Honda Accord TCM (1990–1993) — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Honda Accord TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the TCM or probe/force connector pins (terminal damage can cause new faults).

  • Step 1: Confirm the symptoms
    • Note exactly what’s happening: harsh/late shifts, stuck in a single gear, won’t shift, starts in 2nd/3rd, flashing “S” (if equipped), or intermittent shifting issues.
    • Confirm if the issue is cold-only, hot-only, or only under load/highway.
  • Step 2: Pull transmission codes (don’t rely on engine codes)
    • Check for TCM/AT fault codes using the correct vehicle method (OBD1-era procedures or a scan tool that supports these years).
    • Write down codes before clearing anything—codes help separate electrical control issues from hydraulic/mechanical problems.
  • Step 3: Battery voltage and grounds (most common after reinstall)
    • Confirm battery is healthy and charging voltage is stable.
    • Inspect and clean the transmission/engine grounds (loose or corroded grounds can cause false solenoid or speed-sensor faults).
    • Check the TCM connector for bent pins, corrosion, or a connector that isn’t fully latched.
  • Step 4: Fuse + power feed checks
    • Verify all fuses related to ECU/TCM, IGN, and back-up/stop circuits (names vary by model).
    • If the car starts but won’t shift correctly, don’t assume the TCM is bad—missing IGN power to the TCM can mimic a failed module.
  • Step 5: Solenoid and internal harness checks
    • Inspect the transmission solenoid connectors for fluid intrusion, corrosion, or broken wiring.
    • If codes point to shift solenoids/lock-up, check the external harness first—many issues are harness/connector related, not the TCM.
  • Step 6: Speed sensor related checks
    • If you have codes or symptoms that suggest no/incorrect shifting, verify the vehicle speed sensor circuit and connector condition.
    • A bad speed signal can cause wrong shift timing or limp behavior even with a good TCM.
  • Step 7: ATF condition and mechanical red flags
    • Check ATF level/condition. Burnt fluid, heavy debris, or slipping under load suggests an internal transmission issue (not module-related).
    • If it shifts fine for a short time then acts up as it warms, consider solenoid/hydraulic issues and heat-related wiring faults.
  • Step 8: If the same codes return immediately
    • If the exact same transmission codes come back right away after reinstall, the issue is usually vehicle-side: power/ground, harness, solenoid, or speed sensor circuit.
    • A shop can perform quick pin-to-pin checks and load-testing to pinpoint where voltage/ground is dropping.
