Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic VGS 722.9 (Conductor Plate / TCM) — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Mercedes-Benz 7G-Tronic VGS 722.9 conductor plate/TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or force/probe the connector pins. If the conductor plate plug/connector is broken, replacement is required.

  • Step 1: Confirm you’re chasing the correct part
    • Verify the issue is transmission-related (shift quality/gear engagement/limp mode) and not an engine misfire/ABS/traction issue causing reduced power.
    • Confirm the vehicle actually has a 722.9 / 7G-Tronic VGS conductor plate (not a different trans variant).
  • Step 2: Check the connector/plug before anything else
    • Inspect the round transmission connector area for broken locking tab, cracked housing, pushed/bent pins, fluid intrusion, or a connector not fully seated.
    • If the connector is damaged, it can cause intermittent/no communication, limp mode, or gear errors even with a good module.
  • Step 3: Scan for transmission codes (TCM/VGS)
    • Use a scan tool that can read TCM/VGS (722.9) data (generic OBD2 often misses key TCM faults).
    • Record codes and freeze-frame, then clear and recheck after a short drive to see what returns immediately.
  • Step 4: Verify power supply and grounds
    • Confirm battery voltage is healthy and charging system is stable (low voltage can trigger false VGS faults).
    • Check transmission/TCM related fuses and any chassis ground points tied to drivetrain electronics.
  • Step 5: Inspect for ATF wicking up the harness
    • Look for transmission fluid traveling up the harness toward the module area (common source of connector contamination).
    • If fluid is present at connectors, clean/repair the harness side as needed—fluid contamination can recreate faults.
  • Step 6: Confirm CAN communication integrity
    • If you have “no communication” with the VGS, check for other modules failing to communicate (network issue vs VGS issue).
    • If multiple modules drop off the network, focus on vehicle power/ground and CAN wiring faults first.
  • Step 7: Validate live data basics
    • Check live data for gear position, input/output speed signals, and selector lever plausibility (implausible signals often point to wiring/sensor issues, not the VGS itself).
    • If the vehicle won’t shift and speed signals are missing/erratic, inspect related sensors/wiring.
  • Step 8: Relearn/adaptation checks when applicable
    • Some vehicles may require adaptations/relearns after transmission work or battery events.
    • If the issue began immediately after other work (battery, transmission service, wiring repairs), re-check what was touched first.
  • Step 9: If the same code returns immediately
    • Immediate repeat codes commonly indicate connector damage, harness faults, fluid intrusion, or vehicle power/ground issues.
    • A qualified shop can perform voltage-drop and pin-fit testing at the transmission connector to confirm.
