Jaguar XJ8 / XJR Transmission Control Module Troubleshooting

Post-Repair Guide

Use this guide only after reinstalling a repaired TCM and the vehicle is still reporting a communication issue.

This is not an installation guide and not a diagnostic guide for unrepaired modules.

Supported Vehicles

  • Jaguar XJ8 1998 to 2003
  • Jaguar XJR 1998 to 2003
  • North America only

Primary Repair Reason

  • U0101 - Lost communication with TCM

Step 1 – Confirm the Symptom

After reinstalling the repaired TCM, verify the concern:

  • U0101 or similar no communication code returns
  • Scan tool cannot communicate with the TCM
  • Transmission related warning messages remain present

Note when it occurs:

  • Immediately after reinstall
  • After clearing codes and driving
  • After the vehicle sits

Step 2 – Perform a Vehicle Sleep Reset

  • Turn ignition off
  • Remove the key
  • Close all doors and lock the vehicle
  • Allow the vehicle to sit for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Recheck communication with the TCM

Step 3 – Verify Reinstallation

  • Confirm the original TCM sent to UpFix was reinstalled
  • Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked
  • Inspect connectors for bent pins, corrosion, or oil contamination
  • Verify the TCM mounting location is secure and grounded properly

Step 4 – Power and Network Check

  • Verify battery voltage is stable
  • Check transmission and engine related fuses
  • Scan other modules to confirm overall network communication
  • If multiple modules show communication faults, suspect a vehicle-side issue

Step 5 – Scan Tool Verification

  • Use a Jaguar-capable scan tool
  • Attempt direct communication with the TCM
  • Clear all codes and rescan after a key cycle

If the TCM communicates intermittently or drops offline, this may indicate a vehicle-side wiring or power issue.

What This Repair Covers

  • Internal TCM failure causing loss of communication
  • Logic or internal power faults within the TCM

What This Repair Does NOT Cover

  • Wiring or connector damage
  • CAN bus faults external to the TCM
  • Solenoid or valve body issues
  • Transmission mechanical problems

If the Issue Is Still Present

If the steps above have been completed and the issue remains, please stop further troubleshooting.

Have the customer call or email UpFix directly using the contact information from their order confirmation.

When contacting UpFix, please provide:

  • Order number
