Allison A50 GM TCM (2009–2015) — Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Allison A50 GM TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or attempt internal repairs.

  • Step 1: Battery and power supply check

    • Low voltage can cause false TCM/shift complaints.

    • Confirm battery is healthy and charging system is stable.

  • Step 2: Full vehicle scan and document codes

    • Scan TCM, PCM, ABS, and BCM.

    • Save exact codes, freeze frame, and whether codes are current or history.

  • Step 3: Verify TCM power, ground, and fuses under load

    • Check all transmission/TCM fuses and relays (don’t rely on visual checks only).

    • Confirm grounds are clean/tight (battery to chassis and engine grounds).

  • Step 4: Inspect TCM connector and harness

    • Look for bent pins, spread terminals, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose lock tabs.

    • Check harness routing for rub-through near the transmission and frame.

  • Step 5: Check CAN communication health

    • If you have U-codes or “No Communication,” inspect CAN wiring and splices.

    • A network issue can look like a bad TCM even when the TCM is fine.

  • Step 6: Confirm transmission side hardware isn’t the root cause

    • Inspect external range switch/selector issues, speed sensors, and wiring.

    • Verify no trans fluid contamination inside connectors.

  • Step 7: Solenoid and internal harness checks if shift issues persist

    • Solenoid/harness faults can cause slipping, harsh shifts, limp mode, or no-shift.

    • If codes point to solenoid circuits, focus on internal harness/solenoid resistance.

  • Step 8: Verify programming / calibration is correct for the vehicle

    • Wrong calibration or mismatch can cause incorrect shifting and repeated faults.

    • Confirm correct VIN/programming state for the application.
