Allison GM TCM (2001–2005) — Troubleshooting Guide
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Allison GM TCM 2001–2005) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or attempt internal repairs.

Step 1: Battery voltage and charging check

Low voltage can trigger false TCM faults and harsh/erratic shifting.

Confirm battery health and stable charging.

Step 2: Full module scan and record codes

Scan TCM, PCM, ABS, BCM.
-
Save exact codes and note current vs history.
-

Step 3: Verify TCM power, ground, and fuses under load
-
Check all transmission/TCM fuses and relays with a meter.
-
Confirm battery grounds and engine-to-chassis grounds are clean/tight.

Step 4: Inspect TCM connector and harness

Look for bent pins, spread terminals, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose connectors.

Inspect harness for rub-through near the trans, frame, and crossmember.

Step 5: Check network/communication issues if U-codes or “no comm”

Inspect CAN wiring/splices and verify no shorts to power/ground.

A network fault can mimic a bad TCM.

Step 6: Confirm transmission-side inputs aren’t the root cause

Range switch/selector, speed sensors, and wiring can cause limp mode/no-shift.

Check for contamination or damage at transmission connectors.

Step 7: Solenoid and internal harness checks if shift/pressure codes persist

Solenoid circuit faults can cause slipping, harsh shifts, or default/limp behavior.

If codes point to a specific solenoid/circuit, focus there first.

Step 8: Verify programming/calibration and vehicle configuration match

Wrong calibration/mismatch can cause shift issues and recurring faults.

Confirm the unit matches the vehicle application and programming state.
