Ford Focus / Fiesta DPS6 (6DCT250) TCM — Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Ford Focus/Fiesta DPS6 TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or attempt internal repairs.

  • Step 1: Verify battery and charging health

    • Low voltage causes DPS6 faults, no-start, and shift issues.

    • Confirm good battery, clean terminals, and stable charging voltage.

  • Step 2: Scan ALL modules for codes (TCM + PCM + ABS)

    • Save the exact codes and freeze frame.

    • If you have “No Communication with TCM,” go to Step 3 and Step 4 first.

  • Step 3: Check TCM fuses, power, and grounds

    • Verify all related fuses (TCM/PCM/Transmission) are good under load.

    • Inspect/clean the main grounds (battery to chassis, chassis to engine).

  • Step 4: Inspect the TCM connector and harness closely

    • Look for bent pins, spread terminals, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.

    • Check for rubbed-through wiring near the transmission and battery tray.

  • Step 5: Check clutch actuator motors and wiring

    • Actuator motor faults or high resistance wiring can trigger limp mode/shudder/no-shift.

    • Inspect actuator connectors and harness strain points.

  • Step 6: Confirm shift fork/actuator movement and mechanical condition

    • Mechanical binding inside the transmission can mimic an electrical TCM fault.

    • If the vehicle has grinding/no engagement symptoms, mechanical diagnosis is needed.

  • Step 7: Relearn / adaptation after reinstall (required on many DPS6 repairs)

    • Many DPS6 setups need clutch/shift learn after a TCM reinstall.

    • Use a capable scan tool to perform the TCM adaptive relearn procedure.

  • Step 8: Rule out common non-TCM causes

    • Failed TCM power relay/fuse contact issues.

    • Poor grounds causing intermittent comm faults.

    • Transmission internal clutch wear/overheat events causing repeated faults.
