Universal PCM Repair — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired PCM (ECU/Engine Computer) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the PCM or force/probe connector pins (terminals can spread and cause new faults).

  • Step 1: Confirm the correct PCM is installed
    • Verify the part number on the PCM matches the original unit.
    • If a different PCM was installed, it may require in-vehicle programming before it will start/communicate.
  • Step 2: Battery voltage + main grounds
    • Fully charge/test the battery (low voltage can cause no-start/no-comms).
    • Clean/tighten battery terminals.
    • Inspect and tighten engine ground straps and main chassis grounds.
  • Step 3: Check PCM power fuses + relays
    • Check all fuses related to ECU/PCM/IGN/EFI/INJ/MPI/ECM/ENG (under-hood and interior).
    • Swap the PCM/EFI/MPI relay with a known-good matching relay (if possible).
  • Step 4: Inspect connectors for moisture/corrosion
    • Unplug PCM connectors and inspect for:
      • Corrosion/green tint, moisture/water marks, bent pins, pushed-out pins, loose terminals
    • Re-seat connectors firmly and ensure all latches are fully locked.
  • Step 5: Check for water intrusion
    • Look for signs of leaks near the PCM location (kick panel/cowl/windshield area).
    • Any moisture in connectors can cause intermittent no-start, stalling, or no-communication.
  • Step 6: If the complaint is “No Communication”
    • Confirm the OBD-II port has power/ground (a dead port can look like a dead PCM).
    • Remove/disable aftermarket add-ons (remote start, alarm, tuner, tracker) and retry scanning.
    • If multiple modules won’t scan, suspect a vehicle power/network issue rather than the PCM.
  • Step 7: If the complaint is crank/no-start
    • Verify fuel pump prime and fuel pressure.
    • Check for spark and injector pulse during cranking.
    • Inspect crank/cam sensor connectors and wiring (common causes that mimic PCM failure).
  • Step 8: If the issue is intermittent / random warning lights
    • Inspect harness routing for rub-through near the battery/fuse box/engine.
    • Have a shop perform voltage-drop tests on PCM power/grounds under load (cranking/running).
  • Step 9: If the problem began after other repairs
    • Re-check anything recently touched: fuses/relays, grounds, sensors, battery connections, harness routing.
  • Step 10: If the issue persists
    • A qualified shop should verify PCM power, ground, and relay outputs at the PCM connector while the fault is happening (intermittent power/ground is the #1 repeat cause).
