Ford PCM Repair — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Ford PCM and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the PCM or force/probe connector pins (terminals can spread and cause new faults).
- Step 1: Verify the correct PCM was installed
- Confirm the part number matches the original PCM from the vehicle.
- If a different PCM was installed, the vehicle may need in-vehicle programming and may not start/communicate until programmed.
- Step 2: Battery voltage + main connections
- Fully charge the battery; low voltage causes false codes/no-start/no-comms.
- Clean/tighten battery terminals.
- Verify engine ground straps and body grounds are clean and tight.
- Step 3: PCM power fuses + relays
- Check all fuses related to PCM/ECM/IGN/INJ/EFI/Power Relay (under-hood + interior).
- Swap the PCM power relay (and fuel pump/EFI relay if applicable) with a known-good matching relay.
- Step 4: Inspect PCM connectors
- Unplug PCM connectors and inspect for:
- Moisture/water intrusion, corrosion, bent pins, pushed-out pins, loose terminals
- Re-seat connectors firmly and ensure latches are fully locked.
- Unplug PCM connectors and inspect for:
- Step 5: Check for water intrusion / windshield cowl leaks
- Inspect the PCM area and harness for signs of water (wet carpet near kick panel, damp cowl area, residue on connectors).
- Any moisture in connectors can cause intermittent no-start or no-communication.
- Step 6: If the complaint is “No Communication”
- Confirm the OBD-II port has power and ground (a dead port can look like a dead PCM).
- Disconnect aftermarket add-ons (remote start, alarm, tuner, tracker) and retry scanning.
- If multiple modules also won’t communicate, suspect a vehicle network/power issue (not the PCM).
- Step 7: If the complaint is crank/no-start
- Verify the fuel pump primes and fuel pressure is present.
- Verify spark and injector pulse during crank.
- Inspect crank/cam sensor connectors and wiring (common cause of no-start that mimics PCM failure).
- Step 8: If the complaint is intermittent / stalls / random lights
- Re-check power/ground integrity under load (voltage drop testing is best).
- Inspect harness routing near battery/fuse box and along the engine for rub-through.
- Step 9: If the issue started after other work
- Re-check anything recently touched: fuses/relays, grounds, sensor connectors, battery/fuse box connections, harness routing.
- Step 10: If the problem persists
- Have a qualified shop perform voltage-drop tests on PCM power/grounds while cranking/running and verify relay outputs—this finds hidden resistance that simple checks miss.
