Dodge RAM / Van PCM Repair — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Dodge RAM/Van PCM and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the PCM or force/probe connector pins (terminals can spread and cause new faults).
- Step 1: Confirm the PCM is the correct one
- Match the PCM part number to the original (exact match when possible).
- If a different PCM was installed, it may require in-vehicle programming to start/communicate.
- Step 2: Battery + main grounds (Dodge is picky here)
- Battery fully charged and terminals tight/clean.
- Inspect/clean engine-to-body and battery-to-body ground straps.
- Check for loose grounds near the battery, fender, and engine block.
- Step 3: Verify PCM power feeds
- Check all fuses labeled: PCM / ECM / ASD / IGN / FI / INJ / ENG (under-hood + interior).
- Swap the ASD relay and ignition/run relay with a known-good matching relay.
- Step 4: Inspect PCM connectors carefully
- Look for bent pins, pushed-out pins, moisture, corrosion, or spread terminals.
- Re-seat connectors and make sure the latches fully lock.
- Step 5: If the issue is crank/no-start
- Listen for fuel pump prime; verify fuel pressure if possible.
- Check spark and injector pulse during cranking.
- If no spark/injector pulse: focus on ASD relay control, crank sensor signal, and PCM power/ground.
- Step 6: If the issue is intermittent stall / random shutdown
- Wiggle-test harness near the PCM and PDC/fuse box while idling (if safe).
- Inspect harness for rub-through near the battery tray, PDC, and engine.
- Step 7: If the issue is “No Communication”
- Confirm the scan tool powers up and the OBD-II port has power/ground.
- If multiple modules won’t communicate, suspect a vehicle power/network issue (not the PCM).
- Step 8: If problems started after other work
- Re-check anything recently touched: battery connections, fuse/relay seating, grounds, sensors, wiring routes.
- Step 9: When to involve a shop
- If symptoms persist, a shop should verify PCM power/ground and ASD relay outputs at the PCM connector under load (cranking/running). Intermittent power/ground faults are the most common repeat cause.
