Audi Transmission Control Module (TCM) Repair — Troubleshooting Guide
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Audi TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or probe pins from the front of the connector.

Step 1: Confirm symptoms and pull codes first

Scan ALL modules and save the full code list with freeze-frame.

Note if it is a no-shift, stuck in gear, limp mode, harsh shift, PRNDS flashing, or no communication condition.

Step 2: Verify battery and charging health

Low voltage can cause false transmission faults and TCM resets.

Confirm battery is good and charging voltage is stable while running.

Step 3: Check transmission fluid level and condition

Verify level using the OEM procedure for the transmission in the vehicle.

Low, burnt, or contaminated fluid can trigger slip, pressure, and ratio errors that look like a TCM issue.

Step 4: Inspect the TCM connector and harness closely

Check for bent pins, corrosion, fluid intrusion, damaged locks, or a partially seated connector.

Inspect harness routing for chafing near the transmission and underbody.

Step 5: Confirm power and ground to the TCM under load

Check related fuses with a test light (not visual only).

If the issue is intermittent, wiggle-test the harness while monitoring power/ground and scan data.

Step 6: Rule out CAN/network issues

If you have U-codes or intermittent communication, inspect CAN wiring and splice points for corrosion or damage.

Look for signs of water intrusion in connector areas.

Step 7: Verify coding, basic settings, and adaptations

If the TCM was replaced, coded, or the vehicle recently had programming work, it may need correct coding and adaptation/basic settings with a capable scan tool.

Step 8: If shift-related faults persist, consider transmission-side causes

Solenoids, valve body/mechatronic issues, internal speed sensors, or mechanical clutch problems can mimic a bad TCM.

If codes point to specific gears/ratio or pressure control, prioritize hydraulic/mechanical checks.
