Audi MMI Navigation Display Troubleshooting Guide
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Audi MMI Navigation Display and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module—use these vehicle-side checks only.
- Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom
- Screen is completely black but MMI buttons/knob still respond
- Backlight is on but no image (faint logo/graphics only)
- Image is distorted, lines, flicker, washed out, or “negative” colors
- Screen works, then cuts out when warm / when hitting bumps
- Step 2: Confirm the correct part was reinstalled
- Verify this is the MMI display screen (not the MMI head unit, amp, or control panel)
- Confirm the connector style matches the vehicle harness and locks fully
- If the vehicle has multiple screen sizes/variants, confirm you didn’t mix screen types
- Step 3: Check MMI reset and wake behavior
- Perform an MMI reboot/reset (if equipped) and confirm the system “wakes” consistently
- If the system audio continues normally but the screen stays dead, focus on screen power/ground/backlight feed and video signal
- Step 4: Inspect and reseat the screen connector
- Fully reseat the LVDS/video connector and main power connector (if separate)
- Look for bent pins, pushed-back terminals, corrosion, or moisture
- If wiggling the harness changes the image, suspect terminal tension or harness strain at the connector
- Step 5: Verify power/ground and fuses for the infotainment system
- Check infotainment/MMI-related fuses (MMI, radio, display, “information electronics”)
- Confirm stable vehicle voltage (weak battery can cause screen boot issues/flicker)
- If the screen is intermittently blank at crank, test with a known-good battery/charging system
- Step 6: Differentiate “no backlight” vs “no video”
- No backlight (screen looks fully dead): usually power, ground, fuse, wake/enable, or backlight feed
- Backlight on but no image: often LVDS/video signal issue, MMI head unit output, or coding/variant mismatch
- Step 7: Scan the vehicle for infotainment/network faults
- Scan for MMI/infotainment related faults (gateway, information electronics, head unit)
- If multiple modules show “no communication,” address network/power faults first—screen may be fine
- Step 8: If the issue started after recent work
- Re-check anything recently touched: battery disconnect, MMI retrofit, radio swap, dash removal, water leak repair
- Aftermarket equipment/splices near infotainment wiring commonly cause intermittent screen issues
