Post-Repair Troubleshooting Guide
Pontiac G8 (2008–2009) Bosch ECU/ECM
Primary issue repaired: No communication with ECU/ECM
1) Start with the basics (most common causes)
-
Verify the battery is fully charged (low voltage can cause no-comm).
-
Confirm the battery terminals are clean and tight.
-
If the vehicle was recently jump-started or the battery was replaced, re-check all main power and ground connections.
2) Confirm the scan tool setup is correct
-
Try at least two scan tools (or a different cable/adapter).
-
Attempt communication through:
-
OBD “Auto Detect”
-
Manual selection for the vehicle
-
-
If the scan tool communicates with other modules but not the ECU, continue below.
3) Check if the OBD port has proper power/ground
-
Confirm the OBD port has:
-
Power present
-
Solid ground
-
-
If the scan tool powers on inconsistently, fix the OBD power/ground first.
4) Verify ECU power and grounds under load
-
Confirm all ECU power feeds and all grounds are present.
-
Do not rely on a quick “12V is there” check.
-
Load-test power and ground circuits (voltage drop testing is best).
-
-
Pay special attention to:
-
Ignition-switched power
-
Main ECU relay power feed
-
Engine/chassis ground straps
-
5) Check fuses and the ECU relay (don’t just look at them)
-
Test ECU-related fuses with a meter (not visual-only).
-
Verify the ECU relay:
-
Has power at the input
-
Clicks/energizes with key-on
-
Sends power out to the ECU
-
6) Confirm the ECU is actually “waking up”
-
Key ON:
-
Verify ignition power feed(s) appear at the ECU.
-
-
Key OFF:
-
Verify any constant power feed(s) remain stable.
-
-
If power/ground are correct and stable but still no communication, continue.
7) Inspect the communication network (CAN/GMLAN)
-
A single shorted module, damaged wiring, or corrosion can take down communication.
-
Check for:
-
Corrosion or pushed-out pins at ECU connectors
-
Pin fitment issues (loose terminals)
-
Harness damage near the ECU and along common rub points
-
-
If available:
-
Measure network resistance at the DLC and/or at the ECU connector (typical healthy CAN will read near 60 ohms depending on architecture).
-
Look for shorts to power/ground on communication lines.
-
8) Rule out a vehicle-side module pulling the network down
-
If multiple modules show “no communication” or the scan tool intermittently connects:
-
Disconnect other suspect modules one at a time (starting with recently serviced areas).
-
Re-check communication after each disconnect.
-
-
If communication returns when another module is unplugged, the issue is vehicle-side.
9) Confirm ECU match and vehicle anti-theft/learn requirements
-
Verify the ECU is the correct unit for the vehicle application.
-
Some vehicles may require:
-
Security/anti-theft synchronization
-
Module setup or variant configuration
-
Relearn procedures after install
-
-
If the vehicle cranks but will not start, or security indicators are present, security setup may be required.
10) Clear codes and re-scan after checks
-
After any wiring/power/ground corrections:
-
Clear all codes
-
Cycle the key
-
Re-scan for ECU communication
-
-
If communication is restored but codes return immediately, address the root cause (power/ground/network).
11) If the ECU still will not communicate
-
Re-check:
-
Power and ground with voltage drop testing
-
ECU relay output under load
-
CAN/GMLAN integrity (shorts, opens, corrosion)
-
-
If all vehicle-side checks pass and the ECU still will not communicate:
-
Contacting customer support with:
-
VIN
-
A complete scan report (all modules)
-
Any measured power/ground results
-
Notes on network resistance/short checks performed
-
