Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Nissan/Infiniti ECU/ECM and the problem is still happening.
Please do not open/disassemble the module. This can damage the unit and may void warranty coverage.
Before Step 1: If your ECU originally had no communication and we restored functionality
- If the VIN is incomplete, the software is incorrect, or software-related issues are still present, the ECU may still need in-vehicle reprogramming.
- Firmware updates, VIN writing, and software configuration must be performed in-vehicle with a compatible OBD-II programming tool.
- This repair service restores hardware/functionality only and does not include in-vehicle programming or firmware updates unless explicitly stated.
- If the ECU now communicates after repair, that means functionality was restored, but additional vehicle-side programming may still be required to fully complete the repair.
Step 1: Confirm correct ECU and installation
- Confirm the ECU part number matches your original unit.
- Make sure the ECU is mounted properly and all connectors are fully latched and locked.
- Inspect for bent pins, pushed-back pins, loose terminals, corrosion, or moisture at the connectors.
Step 2: Check battery voltage first
- Fully charge the battery before continuing.
- Low voltage can cause no-start, no-communication, and false trouble codes.
- Disconnect the battery negative cable for 10 minutes, reconnect it, then turn the key on and retry.
Step 3: Check ECU fuses and ECU relay
- Check all fuses related to ECU, ECM, EFI, IGN, and INJ circuits in both the engine bay and interior fuse panels.
- Test the fuses with a meter or test light instead of only looking at them.
- Swap the ECM/EFI relay with a known-good same-type relay if possible.
Step 4: Inspect ECU connectors and wiring
- Key off before unplugging anything.
- Inspect the ECU connectors for:
- Bent or damaged pins
- Pushed-back terminals
- Corrosion or moisture
- Damaged connector locks
- Re-seat the connectors until they fully click and lock.
- Check nearby harness areas for rubbing, pinched wiring, rodent damage, or prior repair work.
Step 5: Verify ECU power and grounds
- Have a shop verify at the ECU connector:
- Constant battery power feed(s)
- Ignition-switched power feed(s)
- Strong ground(s)
- Inspect and clean battery terminals and main engine/chassis grounds.
- Poor power or ground is one of the most common causes of ECU issues.
Step 6: If the scan tool still will not communicate with the ECU
- Confirm the scan tool communicates with other modules.
- If nothing communicates, check:
- OBD-II port power and ground
- OBD-II port fuse
- CAN wiring faults or shorts
- Recent stereo, alarm, remote start, or wiring work can cause communication problems and should be checked carefully.
Step 7: If the ECU communicates but the vehicle still will not start
- Check for spark, injector pulse, and fuel pressure.
- Confirm the crank and cam sensors are plugged in and their wiring is not damaged.
- Recheck any recent work involving the battery, starter, grounds, harnesses, or fuse box.
- If communication is restored but the vehicle still has running issues, the fault may be outside the ECU.
Step 8: If the VIN is incomplete or software-related problems remain
- If the ECU now communicates but still shows an incomplete VIN, incorrect calibration, or software-related faults, it likely needs in-vehicle programming.
- This must be done with a compatible OBD-II programming tool.
- Hardware repair alone cannot correct every software or configuration issue.
Step 9: If the issue continues
Please provide:
- Order number
- VIN
- Full code list from all modules
- Whether the scan tool connects to other modules
- Any recent wiring work, jump-start, battery replacement, or water intrusion
