Toyota/Lexus TCM (4Runner/Pickup/Tacoma) — Troubleshooting Guide
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Toyota/Lexus TCM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module or attempt internal repairs.

Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom

Note if it is stuck in a gear, won’t shift, harsh shifts, no OD, no lockup, or intermittent operation.

If the vehicle is OBD1/early OBD2 and a scan tool can’t talk to it, use flash codes if applicable.

Step 2: Check battery voltage and charging stability
-
Low voltage can trigger shift issues and false electrical faults.
-
Confirm stable charging voltage and good battery condition.
-

Step 3: Verify TCM power, ground, and fuses
-
Check all transmission/ECU/ignition fuses (including IG, ECU, EFI, GAUGE, and any “AT” fuse).

Confirm grounds are clean/tight and not corroded at the body/engine ground points.

Step 4: Inspect the TCM connector and harness condition

Look for bent pins, corrosion, moisture intrusion, or loose terminals.
-
Make sure the connector fully locks and the harness isn’t strained or pulled tight.

Step 5: Inspect transmission solenoid wiring and connectors
-
Many shift problems are caused by open/shorted solenoids or damaged wiring at the transmission.

Check for rubbed-through wiring near the bellhousing, exhaust, and frame rails.

Step 6: Check ATF level and condition
-
Low or contaminated fluid can cause slip, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, and no lockup.

Correct fluid level must be set using the proper procedure for the year/model.

Step 7: Rule out common non-TCM causes

TPS adjustment/failure (common on older Toyota) can cause wrong shift timing.
-
Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) issues can cause no shift/no OD.
-
Range selector / inhibitor switch can cause wrong gear starts or no-start/shift logic issues.
