Jaguar XJ6 / XJ12 Instrument Cluster TS Guide

Covered issues for this SKU group only

  • Background lights not working or intermittent
  • Main center display pixelated or not working

Use this guide only if the repaired cluster was reinstalled and the issue is still present.

  1. Confirm the symptom
  • Background lights do not turn on at night
  • Background lights flicker or cut in and out
  • Background lights are very dim
  • Center display is blank
  • Center display is pixelated or missing segments
  • Both issues are still present

Also note when it happens

  • Immediately after install
  • Only when headlights are on
  • Only after bumps or after driving
  • Only when changing dimmer brightness
  • Worse when cold or hot
  1. Quick reset and reinstall checks
  • Key off
  • Disconnect battery negative for 5 minutes
  • Reconnect and retest
  • Make sure the same repaired cluster was installed (not a different used cluster)
  • Confirm the cluster is fully seated and mounted correctly
  1. Check vehicle interior illumination first
  • Turn headlights on
  • Check if other interior illumination works
    • radio illumination
    • HVAC panel illumination
    • window or switch backlighting
  • If other interior illumination is also out, the issue is likely vehicle-side (fuse, dimmer, wiring)
  1. Dimmer switch test
  • Turn headlights on
  • Move the dimmer wheel up and down slowly
  • Watch for any change in brightness
  • If other interior lights change but the cluster stays dark, continue to the next step
  • If nothing changes anywhere, suspect dimmer circuit or related fuse
  1. Check fuses with a meter or test light

Do not rely on visual inspection

  • Instrument cluster / gauges fuse
  • Interior illumination / panel lamps fuse
  • Ignition feed fuse for dash electronics

If a fuse is blown

  • Replace once and retest
  • If it blows again, stop and advise vehicle-side short diagnosis before continuing
  1. Connector and pin inspection

If lights or display are intermittent, this step solves most comebacks

  • Remove cluster again
  • Inspect harness connectors and pins
    • bent pins
    • backed-out terminals
    • corrosion or green residue
    • broken or loose locking tabs
  • Reinstall and ensure connectors are fully latched and locked
  • Retest with headlights on and dimmer movement
  1. If the center display is still blank or pixelated
  • Retest with dimmer fully up
  • Retest with headlights both on and off
  • If the display changes when the dimmer is moved, treat as vehicle illumination input issue
  • If the issue changes with temperature, note it for customer support
  • Avoid overtightening screws or flexing the cluster during install
  1. If the complaint is outside the two supported issues

This SKU group is not intended for

  • dead gauges
  • warning lights that remain on
  • communication issues
  • mileage programming requests
  • no crank / vehicle dead complaints

If those are the main complaints

  • verify power, ground, fuses, and wiring first
  • then contact customer support with details
  1. What to collect before contacting customer support
  • Order number
  • VIN
  • Year and model
  • Photo at night with headlights on showing the backlighting issue
  • Close-up photo of the center display if pixelated or missing segments
  • Short video showing dimmer adjustment while the symptom is present
  • Confirmation that fuses and connectors were checked and reseated
  1. Contacting customer support
  • If Steps 2 through 7 were completed and the same symptom remains, contact customer support and include the items from Step 9
