We do not repair hardware, do not diagnose your vehicle, and do not guarantee that a firmware update will resolve any specific symptom. Fault codes such as “lost communication with BCM,” intermittent starting, no-start conditions, or warning lights cycling on and off are symptoms — most often caused by wiring, power, ground, water intrusion, or other failed modules, not firmware. You are responsible for deciding whether a firmware update is the correct next step for your vehicle. Programming services are non-refundable regardless of whether they resolve your vehicle’s symptoms. |
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your reprogrammed GM BCM and the original problem is still happening, or if you are deciding whether this service is right for your vehicle before placing an order.
Important: Do not open, disassemble, or modify the BCM. Do not probe connector pins with tools that can spread or bend the terminals.
Step 1: Understand What This Service Did — and Did NOT Do
Before troubleshooting, confirm what was actually performed. This service did the following, and nothing more:
- Connected the BCM to GM’s online programming system
- Flashed the BCM to the latest OEM firmware version for the VIN provided
- Verified the programming session completed successfully
This service did NOT:
- Repair any hardware fault inside the BCM
- Diagnose your vehicle or any other module
- Clear or address fault codes stored in other modules
- Test the BCM’s interaction with your specific vehicle on the bench
- Perform any vehicle-side relearn procedures (these must be done after reinstall — see Step 6)
If your symptoms are unchanged after reinstall, the cause was not firmware. Continue through the steps below to identify the actual root cause.
Step 2: Confirm the BCM Part Number Matches Your Vehicle
GM uses many different BCM part numbers across model years, trim levels, and option packages. They are not interchangeable, and a firmware update will not make an incorrect BCM work in your vehicle.
- Verify the part number stamped on your BCM matches the original part number for your VIN.
- If you installed a salvage or replacement BCM, confirm it is the correct part number for your specific year, model, and options.
- Look up your VIN at a GM dealer parts counter or in a GM parts catalog if you are unsure.
- An incorrect part number will not communicate properly even after a successful firmware flash.
Step 3: Battery and Charging System Check
Weak batteries, parasitic draws, and faulty alternators cause symptoms that look exactly like BCM failure — intermittent no-start, modules dropping off the network, erratic electrical behavior, warning lights cycling on and off. Verify both before suspecting the BCM.
- Resting battery voltage: 6V or higher after sitting overnight.
- Running voltage: 8–14.7V at idle with accessories off.
- Load-test the battery at a parts store — voltage alone does not tell you if the battery can hold load.
- Check for parasitic draw if the vehicle drains overnight. A healthy draw is under 50 mA after the vehicle goes to sleep.
- Clean and tighten the battery terminals and the battery-to-chassis and engine-to-chassis ground straps. Corroded grounds mimic a bad BCM.
Step 4: Re-seat the BCM Connectors
Partially seated or corroded connectors are a leading cause of post-repair complaints. After reinstall, the connectors themselves still need to be fully seated on the vehicle side.
- Unplug and re-plug each connector until it clicks and locks fully. A partially seated plug causes intermittent comms.
- Inspect for bent or pushed-back terminals inside each plug. Do not probe with sharp tools — use a magnifier.
- Check for green corrosion or moisture inside the plugs. If found, locate and repair the water intrusion source before reinstalling.
- Verify the BCM mounting bolts are tight — on some GM platforms, the case is part of the chassis ground path.
Step 5: Confirm BCM Power, Ground, and Fuses
If the BCM has no power, no scan tool will be able to talk to it — it will look like a dead module even after a successful firmware update.
- Check all BCM-related fuses in the interior and underhood fuse boxes (locations vary by model). Replace any blown fuses with the same amperage rating.
- If a fuse blows again immediately, stop and investigate the circuit for a short before replacing more fuses.
- Verify the BCM has battery voltage at the appropriate power pins and a clean ground at the ground pins. Refer to the wiring diagram for your year/model.
Step 6: Perform Required Relearns After BCM Reprogramming
Many GM vehicles require relearn procedures after a BCM reflash. Skipping these will cause symptoms that look like the firmware update failed when it did not.
Depending on your model, you may need to perform:
- Theft system / Passlock relearn — a 30-minute key-on procedure is common on many GM vehicles.
- Idle / throttle relearn — required on many drive-by-wire platforms.
- Window and sunroof initialization — auto-up/down may stop working until reset.
- Steering angle sensor relearn.
- Tire pressure sensor (TPMS) relearn.
- Crank-no-start relearn on platforms where BCM/PCM must re-handshake.
Consult your factory service manual or GM Service Information (gm.subscribenet.com) for the exact relearn procedure for your year and model.
Step 7: If You Still Have “Lost Communication” Codes (U-Codes)
U-codes such as U0140 (Lost Comm w/ BCM), U0073 (Bus A Off), and similar are the most common we see. If they return after reinstall, the issue is upstream of the BCM — not the BCM itself.
- Try a different scan tool. Some generic OBD-II readers cannot communicate with GM BCMs. A GM-capable tool (Tech 2, Autel, Launch, or equivalent) is recommended.
- Check the OBD-II connector (DLC) for battery voltage on pin 16 and good ground on pins 4 and 5.
- Inspect GMLAN / CAN bus wiring for damage — especially near the battery tray, firewall pass-throughs, and underbody routing.
- If multiple modules show lost communication codes (not just BCM), the fault is on the GMLAN network itself, not the BCM.
- A single failing module on the bus can pull the entire network down and make the BCM appear non-communicative.
Step 8: If Body Electrical Functions Are Still Erratic
The BCM commands door locks, lights, windows, mirrors, wipers, and chimes — but the wiring, switches, motors, and bulbs downstream of the BCM are not part of this service. If a specific function is still misbehaving after reinstall, the fault is often downstream.
- Door lock issues: test each actuator individually by commanding it from the scan tool. A non-responsive single door usually points to the actuator or wiring to that door, not the BCM.
- Lighting issues: check the bulb itself, the socket, and the ground point for that light circuit before suspecting the BCM.
- Power window issues: verify the master switch, individual door switches, and the window motor. A bad master switch is a common false-BCM call.
- Intermittent service brake / traction control / instrument cluster issues: these are typically PCM, ABS, or cluster faults — not BCM-related, and not addressed by a BCM firmware update.
Step 9: Re-scan for Codes After a Test Drive
After completing Steps 1–8, clear all codes and drive the vehicle for at least 10–15 minutes through a mix of conditions (start/stop, accessories on and off). Then re-scan and note exactly what comes back.
- Codes gone: the firmware update was the right answer. Continue monitoring.
- Same code returns: work back through Steps 2–7 — the fault is upstream (power, ground, water, CAN wiring, or another module).
- New or different codes: the firmware update was performed correctly, but a separate fault has surfaced. Address it on its own merits.
Step 10: If Symptoms Are Unchanged After All Checks
If the vehicle still presents the same symptoms after working through every step above, the original problem was not a firmware issue. The reprogramming service was still performed correctly — your vehicle simply has a different underlying fault.
- Have a qualified shop perform voltage-drop testing on the BCM power and ground circuits under load.
- Intermittent problems are most often wiring, grounds, connectors, or other failed modules — not the BCM itself.
- If the BCM hardware itself is suspected of failure, that is a separate hardware repair service, not a programming service. Contact us with the codes you scanned, the voltages you measured, and any photos of corrosion or wiring damage you found.
