GM BCM Cloning — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (GM BCM Cloning) module and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the BCM or force/probe connector pins (terminal damage can cause new faults).
- Step 1: Confirm the correct module was installed
- Verify the BCM matches the vehicle/application (correct donor/replacement BCM type for that model).
- Make sure the same BCM location is used (some GM platforms have multiple “modules” customers call a BCM).
- Step 2: Battery voltage and clean power-up
- Fully charge the battery before install.
- Key OFF, connect BCM, then key ON and wait 60–90 seconds before cranking (modules need time to wake and handshake).
- Step 3: Check BCM fuses and main feeds
- Check all BCM/IGN/ACC fuses (under-hood + interior).
- Confirm any BCM/IGN relay clicks/activates.
- A single blown IGN/BCM fuse can cause no-start, dead cluster, no comms, or random electrical issues.
- Step 4: Grounds matter
- Inspect/clean battery terminals and the main chassis/engine grounds.
- If symptoms are intermittent, do a quick wiggle test at grounds and the BCM connector area.
- Step 5: Connector seating and terminal condition
- Ensure connectors are fully seated and locked.
- Look for bent pins, backed-out terminals, corrosion, or moisture in the plugs.
- If prior electrical work was done, re-check what was touched (fuse box, battery, grounds, splices).
- Step 6: If you have “No Communication”
- Confirm the scan tool talks to other modules.
- If many modules are offline, suspect vehicle network/power issue (battery, main fuses, CAN wiring).
- If only the BCM is offline, focus on BCM power/ground circuits and connector integrity.
- Step 7: If the vehicle will not start
- Watch the security indicator behavior.
- Many no-starts after BCM work are caused by:
- Low voltage
- Missed fuse/IGN feed
- Poor ground
- Incorrect donor BCM type
- Vehicle-side wiring/connector problems
- Step 8: If locks/lights/wipers act weird
- Confirm the vehicle is not in transport/valet mode (if applicable).
- Re-scan for body/U-codes and note which modules are complaining (helps isolate wiring vs module).
- Step 9: When to involve a shop
- If the above checks don’t resolve it, a shop should perform:
- Voltage-drop testing on BCM power/ground under load
- Network integrity checks (CAN high/low resistance and continuity)
- Terminal tension testing at BCM connectors (no pin spreading)
