Dodge RAM 2013–2018 Instrument Cluster Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Dodge RAM 2013–2018 instrument cluster and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the cluster—focus on fuses, power/ground, connectors, and vehicle-side checks.

  • Step 1: Identify the exact symptom
    • Cluster completely dead vs resets/reboots vs blank LCD but backlight on vs gauges dead but warning lights work.
    • Note if it happens only during crank, only when warm/cold, or when hitting bumps.
  • Step 2: Check battery/charging first
    • Low system voltage or charging instability can cause cluster boot loops, flicker, or intermittent operation.
    • Inspect battery terminals and main grounds for looseness/corrosion.
  • Step 3: Fuse check (test both sides)
    • Check fuses related to IPC/Cluster, IGN/RUN, IOD, and BCM/Body (names/locations vary).
    • Use a meter/test light—visual checks miss hairline breaks.
  • Step 4: Verify power and ground at the cluster connector
    • Confirm constant B+, key-on B+, and ground are present and stable.
    • Wiggle-test the harness/connector while monitoring voltage to catch intermittent terminal contact.
  • Step 5: Connector/terminal inspection
    • Look for pushed-back pins, bent terminals, moisture/corrosion, or a connector that isn’t fully seated/latched.
    • If pushing on the connector changes the symptom, suspect terminal tension or harness strain.
  • Step 6: If the cluster is “blank” but the truck runs
    • Confirm if warning lights briefly illuminate at key-on (cluster wake test).
    • If no wake at all, focus on power/ground/fuse feeds.
    • If wake happens but screen stays blank, check for vehicle-side communication or module issues.
  • Step 7: Scan the truck for codes (critical on 2013–2018)
    • Pull codes from BCM / TIPM / PCM / ABS and look for U-codes (communication) or low-voltage history.
    • Multiple U-codes usually point to wiring, grounds, battery voltage, or a network issue—not the cluster itself.
  • Step 8: Check the network basics (if intermittent/“no comm”)
    • Inspect for corrosion/water intrusion at under-dash connectors and main body grounds.
    • If the issue started after radio/remote start/alarm work, inspect what was installed/touched first.
  • Step 9: If only one function is wrong
    • Fuel/temp/oil readings: check sender circuits and grounds (a bad ground can mimic a bad gauge).
    • Speed/tach issues: verify sensor data in scan tool—if the scan tool shows correct RPM/speed but cluster doesn’t, it supports a cluster-side issue; if scan data is wrong, it’s vehicle-side.
  • Step 10: If the cluster works on the bench but fails in-vehicle
    • That usually points to vehicle-side power/ground drop, connector/terminal tension, or network faults.
    • Focus on voltage stability during crank and connector integrity before suspecting the cluster again.
