Dodge/Chrysler “Leaking Gauge Face” Instrument Cluster (IPC) – Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Dodge/Chrysler Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the cluster—check vehicle power, grounds, fuses, and communication first.

  • Step 1: Confirm installation
    • Verify the cluster connector(s) are fully seated and locked
    • Inspect for bent/pushed pins, loose terminals, or corrosion at the connector
    • Confirm the harness isn’t pinched behind the dash and isn’t pulling on the plugs
  • Step 2: Verify battery voltage and main grounds
    • Confirm the battery is healthy and fully charged (low voltage can cause gauge dropouts, flicker, resets, and random warnings)
    • Clean/tighten battery terminals and main chassis/engine grounds
    • If the issue happens mainly on start-up or with accessories on, suspect voltage drop or a weak ground
  • Step 3: Check fuses (test, don’t just look)
    • Check all cluster/ignition/interior fuses (some are constant power, some are ignition)
    • Verify power on both sides of each fuse with a test light/meter
    • If a fuse is blowing, inspect wiring for a short before replacing more fuses
  • Step 4: Confirm the symptom is the “gauge face” issue
    • “Leaking gauge face” usually shows as dark blotches, fading/bleeding, or distorted gauge graphics
    • If the issue is inaccurate gauges, dead gauges, warning lights, or no communication, that is typically not caused by the gauge face itself—continue with Steps 5–7
  • Step 5: If gauges read wrong (not a face issue)
    • Compare readings to scan tool data (vehicle speed, RPM, coolant temp, fuel level)
    • If scan data is normal but the cluster is off, suspect vehicle-side power/ground/connector issues first
    • If scan data is also wrong, suspect sensors, wiring, or another control module
  • Step 6: If warning lights are on
    • Scan for codes (ABS, PCM, BCM, etc.)—the cluster often only “reports” a fault coming from another module
    • Address the root cause code before assuming a cluster problem
  • Step 7: If the issue is intermittent
    • Re-check connector pin fitment and ground points (intermittent issues are commonly loose terminals or voltage drops)
    • Inspect for moisture intrusion in the dash area and signs of prior wiring work (remote start, radio install, aftermarket devices)
  • Course of action
