Audi Differential Electronic Module (DEM) Post-Repair Troubleshooting Guide
Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Audi Differential Electronic Module (DEM) and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module. Opening the module can damage it and may void warranty coverage.

Common symptoms this guide helps with:
- Communication issues with the DEM
- Internal fault codes related to the DEM
Step 1: Verify the concern matches the repaired module
- Confirm the vehicle symptoms are related to the differential/torque-vectoring/awd rear diff control (if equipped).
- If your scan tool shows “Lost Communication” or “No Signal” with the DEM, continue to Step 2.
- If the DEM communicates normally but you have mechanical driveline noises, binding, or slipping, the issue may be differential hardware/fluid/clutches rather than electronics.
Step 2: Battery voltage and charging system check
- Key OFF: confirm battery voltage is healthy.
- Engine running: confirm the charging system is stable (no extreme over/under-voltage).
- Low voltage during crank or a weak battery can trigger communication faults and false module codes.
Step 3: Check DEM power and ground (most common vehicle-side cause)
- Inspect the DEM connector(s) for:
- Bent or pushed-back pins
- Moisture, corrosion, dirt, or oil intrusion
- Loose connector lock/retainer not fully seated
- Check related fuses for the AWD/differential control system (use the fuse box legend for your vehicle).
- If any fuse is blown, do not replace it repeatedly—find the short/overload first.
Step 4: Inspect the harness in the failure zones
- Follow the wiring from the DEM toward the vehicle harness and look for:
- Chafing near brackets, subframe, exhaust heat areas
- Pinched sections from prior repairs
- Cracked insulation, stretched wiring, or repaired splices
- If the issue started after drivetrain work (diff service, axle work, suspension work), recheck what was touched.
Step 5: Scan the vehicle and record exact codes
- Perform a full vehicle scan and note:
- DEM fault codes
- Any CAN/network codes in other modules (Gateway/ABS/TCM/ECM)
- If multiple modules show communication/network faults at the same time, the issue is often a vehicle network/power problem (Step 3–4), not the DEM itself.
Step 6: Confirm the DEM is on the correct network and the network is awake
- If the DEM is “not reachable,” check whether other modules on the same network communicate.
- If many modules are offline: suspect battery voltage, gateway wake-up, network wiring, or a shorted module on the bus.
- If only the DEM is offline: focus on DEM power/ground, connector pins, and the DEM branch harness.
Step 7: Clear codes and perform a retest drive
- Clear all codes.
- Drive the vehicle (or key cycle as needed) and re-scan.
- If the same DEM code returns immediately, that’s typically a hard fault (power/ground/network/actuator issue).
- If the code returns intermittently, focus on connector fitment, corrosion, and harness movement/chafing.
Step 8: Check related components that can trigger DEM faults
Depending on the vehicle, DEM faults can be caused by issues in the differential system such as:
- Differential actuator/valve issues (if equipped)
- Sensor or connector issues at the differential
- Fluid contamination or incorrect fluid level (mechanical/hydraulic issues can set module codes)
If you’re unsure, a qualified shop can verify actuator/sensor function and wiring integrity with hands-on testing.
Step 9: If the issue is still present
- Double-check connector seating and fuses one more time.
- If communication is still not possible after power/ground/fuse/harness checks, contact UpFix and provide:
- VIN
- The exact fault codes (and which module reported them)
- Whether the DEM communicates at all
- When the issue happens (immediately, only when hot/cold, after driving, after rain, etc.)
