Allison T14 A40/A41 TCM Programming Only — Troubleshooting Guide (SKU Group)

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired (Allison T14 A40/A41 TCM Programming Only) module and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the TCM or force/probe connector pins (terminal damage can cause new faults).

  • Step 1: Confirm the correct module was installed
    • Verify the TCM matches the vehicle/application (A40 vs A41 / T14 family) and the correct connector style.
    • Confirm the TCM is fully seated/bolted (case ground and vibration can matter on some chassis).
  • Step 2: Battery voltage and grounds (most common cause after install)
    • Verify both batteries (if equipped) are charged and load-test good.
    • Clean/tighten battery terminals, chassis grounds, and engine-to-frame ground straps.
  • Step 3: Power feeds and relays
    • Check TCM/TRANS/IGN fuses in all fuse locations (cab + under-hood/PNDB).
    • If the truck uses an ignition/ECM power relay feeding the TCM, verify it’s not weak/intermittent.
  • Step 4: Connector inspection (do not spread terminals)
    • Inspect for bent pins, pushed-back terminals, corrosion/green residue, oil intrusion, or water tracking.
    • Make sure harness strain relief is correct (no tension pulling on the connector).
  • Step 5: Verify communication before chasing “programming”
    • With a scan tool, confirm you can communicate with multiple modules.
    • If many modules are offline, suspect vehicle power/network issues (not the TCM).
    • If only the TCM is offline, focus on TCM power/ground and the data link path.
  • Step 6: Data link / network basics
    • If the truck uses a diagnostic connector/data link module, inspect that connector and its power/ground.
    • Check for recent upfitter wiring, radio/telematics installs, or aftermarket splices near the data link/TCM.
  • Step 7: If it communicates but has shifting/limp issues
    • Clear codes and recheck which codes return first.
    • Verify transmission fluid level/condition and ensure main trans connector is clean and locked.
    • If symptoms started right after other drivetrain work, inspect what was serviced first (harness routing, connectors, sensors).
  • Step 8: Quick symptom-to-direction
    • No communication: power/ground/fuse/relay/connector/data link
    • Intermittent communication: grounds, battery voltage drop under crank, connector tension/corrosion
    • Harsh shift / limp: vehicle-side sensor/harness/valve body issues are common—scan for specific trans codes to guide diagnosis
  • Step 9: When to escalate
    • If symptoms persist, a truck shop should perform voltage-drop testing at the TCM under load and harness continuity checks between TCM ↔ transmission ↔ data link.
