For my 2014 Mazda 3 tcm, I'm searching for a plug-and-play scenario. What will the firmware upgrade for my tcm do, and is plug-and-play required?

The new TCM firmware has the most updated software from Mazda. This update is required for all exchanges and is optional for the repairs. For the exchanges you will need the exact part number off your TCM and we go by the 1st 4 letters/numbers for the part number. If you opt out of the firmware update you could potentially have the same issues
