Does the refrigerator/freezer cease operating if the main control board fails (and the lights go out and the front water dispenser stops working)?

It's possible, however, it depends on which circuits on the main board have failed. Those circuits may fail, but the compressor and defrost circuits will remain operational. It all depends on the specific failure of the control board, but we do fix faulty control board modules, here is the link
