Bottom Freezer unit, GE Profile French Door. When it stopped cooling, a technician arrived and discover that the fridge was fully broken. He proposed that the mainboard be replaced. I'm suspicious, and I'm afraid that if it's the board, something may have been done to fry it. What should I do next to figure out what the problem is?

The first thing you should do is check where the power wire enters the machine at the control board to ensure that it is connected to 120 volts. If there is, the problem is very certainly with the control board. It's possible that the device got stuck in defrost mode. This would be a problem with the control board.
