GM Keyless Entry Module Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired GM Keyless Entry Module and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module—use these vehicle-side checks only.

  • Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom
    • Fob won’t lock/unlock
    • Intermittent operation / short range
    • Remote start inop (if equipped)
    • “No Remote Detected” / passive entry issues (push-to-start vehicles)
    • Alarm/chirp issues (if equipped)
  • Step 2: Verify the fob first
    • Install a fresh fob battery
    • Try a second known-good fob if available
    • If none of the fobs work, focus on programming/power/communication
  • Step 3: Confirm fob programming / relearn
    • If a fob was replaced, the vehicle battery was disconnected, or the module was unplugged, the fobs may need to be re-learned
    • Verify the vehicle successfully enters learn mode and accepts each fob
  • Step 4: Check power and fuse feeds
    • Check all fuses related to RKE / Keyless / BCM / PEPS / Door Locks / Alarm / RAP
    • Test fuses with a meter/test light on both sides (not visual-only)
  • Step 5: Connector and harness inspection
    • Ensure connectors are fully seated/locked
    • Inspect for moisture intrusion, corrosion, bent pins, pushed-back terminals, or loose terminal tension
    • If moving the connector changes the symptom, suspect terminal fitment or harness damage
  • Step 6: Rule out door/lock hardware issues
    • If locks don’t work from the interior switch either, suspect lock actuators, relays, wiring, or BCM inputs
    • If switches work but fobs don’t, focus on RKE learning/antenna/module communication
  • Step 7: Antenna/receiver and signal interference
    • Range/intermittent issues are often antenna-related or caused by electrical noise
    • Check for aftermarket electronics (remote start, audio equipment, dash cams, phone chargers) tied into power/ground or data wiring
  • Step 8: If the problem started after electrical work
    • Re-check anything recently serviced: battery/jump-start, fuse box work, door wiring repairs, BCM work, or aftermarket installs
    • A weak vehicle battery or poor ground can also cause intermittent keyless operation
