Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Keyless Entry Module Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Keyless Entry Module and the problem is still happening.
Important: Please do not open/disassemble the module—use these vehicle-side checks only.

  • Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom
    • Remote won’t lock/unlock
    • Remote works sometimes / short range
    • Locks cycle by themselves
    • Interior lights stay on / don’t come on
    • Horn chirp/alarm issues (if equipped)
  • Step 2: Verify the remote itself
    • Confirm the fob battery is good and installed correctly
    • Try a second known-good remote if available
    • If you have multiple remotes and none work, focus on vehicle/module inputs
  • Step 3: Confirm remote programming
    • If the remote was replaced, lost power, or the vehicle battery was disconnected, the remote may need to be re-learned
    • Verify the vehicle successfully enters programming mode and accepts each remote
  • Step 4: Check fuses and power feeds
    • Check all fuses labeled KEM / Keyless / Locks / Interior lights / GEM / BCM / Courtesy
    • Use a meter/test light on both sides of the fuse (not visual-only)
  • Step 5: Inspect the module connector(s)
    • Make sure connectors are fully seated/locked
    • Inspect for pushed-back terminals, bent pins, corrosion, moisture, or loose terminal fit
    • If wiggling the connector changes the symptom, suspect terminal tension or harness strain
  • Step 6: Door lock system basics
    • If power door locks don’t work from the switch either, suspect vehicle-side power/ground, lock relays, or actuators (not the remote)
    • If switches work but remotes don’t, focus on programming/antenna/module communication
  • Step 7: Receiver/antenna considerations
    • Poor range/intermittent operation can be caused by antenna/receiver issues or electrical noise
    • Check for aftermarket electronics (remote start/radio amps/chargers) tied into ignition or lock wiring
  • Step 8: If the issue started after electrical work
    • Re-check anything recently touched: battery work/jump-starting, fuse/relay work, door wiring repairs, remote start installs
    • A loose connection or wrong fuse position can disable keyless functions
