Dodge / Chrysler 2001–2008 BCM Troubleshooting Guide

Important: Please do not open or disassemble the module. This guide is meant to rule out common vehicle-side causes first (power, ground, fuses, wiring, and connectors).

  • Step 1: Confirm the problem is truly “No Communication”
    • Verify your scan tool can communicate with other modules (PCM, ABS, Airbag)
    • Confirm you are selecting the correct module in the scan menu (BCM/Fuse Junction Box/Integrated Power Module, depending on model)
  • Step 2: Check battery voltage and reset conditions
    • Low voltage can cause multiple modules to drop off the network
    • If the battery was recently dead or jump-started, charge it fully and re-test
    • Disconnect battery for a short reset only if safe for the vehicle, then re-test communication
  • Step 3: Check BCM-related fuses first
    • Check all fuses labeled BCM/Body/Interior/IGN and any “IOD” style fuses if equipped
    • If any fuse is blown, replace it once and re-test
    • If it blows again, stop and inspect wiring for a short before suspecting the module
  • Step 4: Verify power and ground to the BCM
    • Confirm constant battery power feeds are present at the BCM
    • Confirm ignition power feeds (key on) if applicable
    • Confirm grounds are solid under load (weak grounds can cause no-comm or intermittent comm)
  • Step 5: Inspect connectors closely
    • Unplug and inspect for corrosion/green pins, moisture, bent pins, pushed-out pins, loose terminals, or heat damage
    • Reseat all connectors fully and confirm locking tabs are engaged
    • If the issue is intermittent, gently wiggle-test the harness near the BCM while watching communication
  • Step 6: Rule out network/wiring faults
    • If multiple modules show “no communication,” suspect vehicle-side network wiring or a power/ground issue
    • If only the BCM is offline but others communicate, focus on BCM power/ground and connector integrity first
  • Step 7: Look for recent work that could have triggered it
    • If the problem started after battery work, fuse work, stereo/remote start install, body repair, or interior work
    • Re-check the exact connectors, grounds, and splices that may have been disturbed
  • Step 8: Check for aftermarket alarm/remote start interference
    • Aftermarket systems often tap BCM circuits and can cause network or wake-up issues
    • If possible, temporarily isolate/disable the aftermarket system and re-test communication
  • Step 9: Re-scan after each change
    • After each fuse/connector/power-ground correction, re-scan and confirm the BCM is now visible
    • Once BCM communication returns, clear codes and re-check what returns
  • Step 10: If communication returns but features still fail
    • Verify affected circuits/components (locks, wipers, interior functions) are not shorted or drawing excessive current
    • A failing actuator/motor can cause repeat fuse issues and make the BCM appear “dead”
  • If the BCM still will not communicate
    • Call or email UpFix for the fastest help, especially if the issue happens immediately after install
