Important: Use this guide if you reinstalled your repaired Convertible Power Soft Top Control Module and the problem is still happening.
- Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom
- Top won’t operate, works intermittently, blown fuses/electrical issues, faulty micro-switch symptoms, and/or hydraulic fluid leak symptoms
- Note when it fails (only cold/hot, after rain/wash, after sitting, or only while driving)
- Step 2: Verify battery voltage and charging health
- Convertible systems are very voltage-sensitive
- Low voltage can disable top operation or cause intermittent behavior
- If the battery was recently dead or jump-started, fully charge it and re-test
- Step 3: Check all soft-top related fuses and relays
- Check fuses for the soft top control module, pump/motor, and any “top/roof/convertible/body” labeled fuses
- If a fuse is blown, replace it once and re-test
- If it blows again, stop—inspect wiring and the pump/motor for a short before suspecting the module
- Step 4: Make sure vehicle conditions for operation are met
- Vehicle in the required gear position (often PARK)
- Parking brake status (if required)
- Trunk divider/cargo partition in the correct position (if equipped)
- Latches fully released/engaged as required
- Windows indexed/down as required by the vehicle (model dependent)
- Step 5: Scan the vehicle and record codes (if available)
- Perform a full vehicle scan and record soft top/body-related codes
- Clear codes and see what returns after attempting to operate the top
- Step 6: Inspect pump/motor wiring and connectors
- Inspect pump/motor connector for corrosion, moisture, loose pins, or overheated terminals
- Inspect harness routing near hinges/trunk areas and any flex points for rubbed-through wiring
- Wiring shorts can cause blown fuses and “won’t operate” symptoms
- Step 7: Verify power and ground at the pump/motor (under load)
- Confirm power feed and ground integrity under load
- Weak grounds can mimic a bad module and cause intermittent operation
- Step 8: Micro-switch and latch input checks
- If the top starts then stops, or works only sometimes, a latch or position micro-switch may be inconsistent
- Check connector seating at latch/position switches and inspect harness at moving joints
- Step 9: Hydraulic leak check (if equipped with hydraulic system)
- Inspect for low fluid signs, dampness near cylinders/lines, or fluid in the trunk/roof mechanism area
- A hydraulic leak can prevent proper operation and can overload the pump/motor over time
- Step 10: Inspect and reseat the control module connectors
- Inspect for corrosion/green pins, moisture, bent/pushed-out pins, loose terminals, or heat damage
- Reseat connectors fully and confirm latches lock
- Step 11: Re-test and re-scan
- Cycle the top multiple times (open/close) and confirm consistent operation
- Re-scan and note any codes that return immediately vs. only after operation
- If the issue is still present
- Call or email UpFix for the fastest help, especially if the issue happens immediately after install
