Important: Please do not open or disassemble the module. This guide is meant to rule out common vehicle-side causes first (power, ground, fuses, wiring, components).
-
Step 1: Confirm the exact symptom
-
What is not working: door locks (all/driver/passenger), washer pump, trunk/liftgate/flipper-glass release
-
Confirm if the problem is constant or intermittent
-
-
Step 2: Verify battery health and voltage stability
-
Low voltage can cause BCM faults and false symptoms
-
If the vehicle recently had a dead battery or jump start, stabilize voltage and re-test
-
-
Step 3: Check fuses first
-
Check fuses related to BCM/fuse box, door locks, washer, and trunk/liftgate release
-
If a fuse is blown, replace it once and re-test
-
If it blows again, stop and inspect wiring and the load (actuator/pump/latch) for a short
-
-
Step 4: Perform a full vehicle scan
-
Scan all modules (not just engine)
-
Record BCM codes and any network/communication codes
-
Clear codes and see what returns immediately
-
-
Step 5: Confirm the BCM communicates on the scan tool
-
If you cannot connect to the BCM, focus on Steps 6–7 before anything else
-
-
Step 6: Verify BCM power and ground
-
Verify all power feeds to the BCM (battery feeds and ignition feeds if applicable)
-
Verify grounds under load (a weak ground can test “OK” but fail when locks/pump are commanded)
-
-
Step 7: Inspect and reseat BCM connectors
-
Inspect for corrosion/green pins, moisture, bent or pushed-out pins, loose terminals, overheated or melted connector areas
-
Reseat connectors fully and confirm latches are locked
-
-
Step 8: Rule out single-component and wiring faults
-
If only one door lock fails, inspect that door’s actuator and door-jamb wiring first
-
If only the washer fails, verify the pump and front harness wiring are not shorted or damaged
-
If only trunk/liftgate/flipper-glass release fails, inspect hinge-area wiring and latch condition first
-
-
Step 9: Check for aftermarket interference
-
Aftermarket alarm/remote start systems often splice into lock circuits and can mimic BCM failure
-
If possible, temporarily isolate/disable the aftermarket system for testing
-
-
Step 10: Re-test functions from multiple inputs
-
Door locks: key fob and interior switch
-
Washer: stalk switch
-
Trunk/liftgate: button and key fob
-
Cycle each function multiple times to confirm consistency
-
-
Step 11: Re-scan after testing
-
Check which BCM codes returned after re-test
-
Note any codes that return immediately
-
-
Step 12: Programming note
-
If the BCM was replaced/swapped, some vehicles require configuration/programming for features to work correctly
-
-
If the issue is still present
-
Call or email UpFix for the fastest help, especially if the issue happens immediately after install
