When I push the start button, the washer appears to function normally. The water comes in for a brief period, then the washer timer goes backward and accomplishes nothing just sets there, and the cycle will not continue. Any suggestions?

You'll need to look at the unit's main board it's faulty. It's bad if it's skipping cycles. You can send it in for a repair, Here is the service link. https://www.upfix.com/product-category/appliances/washing-machine/
