Car is 2000 BMW 540
The speedometer and tachometer needles plummeted to the bottom of the display last week after approximately a quarter mile of driving, and a buzzing sound emanated from the instrument area. Even with the ignition key off, the noise persisted. To quiet the buzzing, I removed the #43 5 amp fuse. This also turned off the cluster's odometer, indicator lights, fuel gauge, and other features. The "buzzing" was later found to be the speedometer needle oscillating at the zero position.
My neighborhood BMW technician in Indianapolis examined connections, ground, etc. today and found that the instrument cluster has to be replaced with a new one, which will cost $833. a used device cannot be reprogrammed, it says.
