For those looking to repair an Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) on a Ford Escape here is the process and a video that should be applicable to 2007-2012.
The EBCM on a mid year Ford Escape is located in the engine compartment on the drivers side next to the firewall. Six (6) brake lines attach to the EBCM and one (1) electronic harness. The EBCM is coupled to the ABS pump and both units are attached to brackets that attach to the vehicle using 3 13mm bolts and 1 10mm nut. Below is the general removal process and a video showing and discussing the process.
- Locate the ABS pump/EBCM unit
- Prepare the area and get tools
- 13 and 14 mm open ended wrenched
- 10 mm socket/wrench
- 13 mm socket/wrench
- T15 extended star screw driver
- Paper towels
- Oil catch buckets/pans
- Brake line caps
- ABS pump plugs
- Brake Bleeder screw sized hose
- Brake fluid catch bottle
- For added access and optics jack up car, use jack stand, and remove drivers side tire
- Recommended - Bleed brakes until at least brake reservoir is empty
- Locate brake bleed screw
- Attach box wrench to screw
- Attach a 7/32 hose to the bleed nipple
- Place other end of hose in catch bottle
- Rotate screw until brake fluid flows
- Once bottle is full or brake fluid reservoir is empty close screw
- Remove the brake lines from the ABS pump using 13/14 mm open ended wrenches
- Note, USED brake fluid contains heavy metals and is considered toxic; gloves are recommended when handling used brake fluid
- Of reservoir is not drained, brake fluid will flow from reservoir to end of brake line
- If not bled, run a catch/drain line from the severed reservoir line to a catch bottle
- Remove 2 13 mm bolts from drivers side wall next to unit
- Remove 1 13 mm bolt from drivers side wall under unit
- Remove 1 10mm nut from under unit
- Remove brake line running across the fire wall from clips to permit additional movement and access
- Negotiate unit out of engine compartment by maneuvering brake lines around pump and brackets and moving unit from baseline location toward passenger side
- Detach wiring harness clip from frame as required to maneuver unit
- Detach wiring harness when clear of brake fluid by pinching lower side of harness and rotating bottom up from 6 to 9 pm (will rotate 90 degrees to open) --> then wiggle harness off and protect from dirt/fluids by bagging.
- Using T15 extended star screwdriver, remove four (4) EBCM screws
- Slide/wiggle off EBCM off of ABS pump
- Protect both module and pump from debris/dirt
- Send in ABS Module to UpFix to get repaired
Amazing removal instructions!
DTC code B1342 is very common for defective Ford ABS Control Module.
Not sure if it is possible on this vehicle to remove just the ABS control module and leaving the ABS Pump in the vehicle still connected can save you a lot of time.
